If you're new to vaping you've probably heard the term sub ohm vaping being thrown around, but what is it?
Today we're going to give you a detailed explanation of exactly what sub ohm vaping is and hopefully help you decide if it's the right choice for you. So let's get started.
Sub ohm vaping is basically vaping using a device whose coils have a resistance of less than one ohm. The ideal solution for cloud chasers and those looking for a massive vape hit, sub ohm vapes are designed to produce thick and flavorful vapor clouds and as a result have quickly become one of the most popular vaping devices.
An ohm is a unit used to measure electrical resistance and all vapes contain a coil that has a resistance reading. So what sub ohm means is that the resistance of the coil you are using to vape is below 1 ohm.
What this basically means is the lower the resistance of your coil the more power you are able to pump through it, which in turn produces more heat leading to faster vapor production with thicker denser vape clouds.
Sound a little technical, don't worry, let me explain.
Your battery releases a charge to your coil (Amps) and generally the lower resistance of your coil the more power you can push through it. The more power you can push through your coil the faster it heats.
The faster your coil heats, the faster it can vaporize your e liquid resulting in a thicker, denser vapor cloud.
Many people ask me, "if you're pushing more power through your vape, is it more dangerous?"
While there is no such thing as ‘absolute’ safety, if you follow Ohm's law and use quality equipment sub ohming is not inherently dangerous.
With that said you need to know the resistance of your coil and follow the manufacturer's recommended wattage range for use with the coil. Over extending the wattage could cause an electrical fault resulting in battery damage and its battery damage that is the main risk for vaping safety.

The biggest difference between using an above ohm or regular vape and a sub ohm vape is the way you inhale. Basically sub ohm set ups are designed for direct to lung inhales.
If you're a smoker you use an (MTL) mouth to lung inhale. First you draw the vapor into your mouth and then inhale that vapor into your lungs using a second breath. As sub ohm vaping delivers a much greater volume of vapor per inhale than a regular vape device trying to sub ohm using an MTL inhale, for most, results in coughing.
In contrast sub ohm vaping uses a (DTL) direct to lung inhale in which vapor is inhaled directly into the lungs with one breath. A DTL inhale is much more intense and as a result requires e-juice with a lower nicotine concentration than regular vaping.
If you're a smoker trying to quit using vaping, you're probably wondering why even bother with sub ohm vaping.
The answer is that sub ohm vaping delivers many advantages which, once you have mastered the DTL inhale, provide a more satisfying user experience.
Like with all things there are pro's and con's and sub ohm vaping is no exception to the rule. We've already looked at why sub ohm vaping is so popular, so what's the downside?

Sub ohming typically requires a vape mod that can deliver at least 40 watts, however depending on the material and resistance of the coil it may require a mod that can deliver up to 200 watts.
With that said there are basically three different types of tank alternatives for those of you who want to try sub ohming. These are listed below.
Sub-Ohm Tanks: these devices are the easiest to use because all of the hard work is done for you. Sub ohm tanks come pre-fitted with a pre-made coil so they save you the trouble of building coil assemblies and wicking. Traditionally these tanks were seen as the best alternative for sub ohm beginners however with the recent advances in sub ohm coil technology the best sub ohm tanks performance rival the performance of RDA's and RTA's.
Rebuild-able Dripping Atomizers: RDA's were the original sub-ohm tanks. This type of sub ohm tank has no storage reservoir for liquid, and coil building and wicking has to be done manually. Due to the absence of the reservoir, the user has to refill the liquid by dripping some over the wick when it becomes dry due to prior vaping.
Rebuild-able Tank Atomizer: RTAs are devices similar to sub-ohm tanks with the main difference being an integrated e-juice reservoir and coil building option. You don’t have to keep on dripping liquid for refilling and have the option to set up a custom coil assembly in order to achieve your best vaping experience. RTAs are basically a hybrid between RDA's and sub-ohm tanks.
If you're looking to try sub ohm vaping so you can produce bigger vape clouds there are a few tips below that will go a long way to helping you achieve your goal.
40 watts Plus: Pair your tank with the right mod. To sub ohm successfully you will need a mod that can draw a minimum of 40 watts. Most sub ohm tanks however perform better at higher wattage.
Use recommended wattage: Every sub ohm tank comes with a set of instructions and adhering to the manufacturers recommended wattage settings will optimize performance.
Use 0.5 Ohm coils or lower: Coils that are rated below 0.5 ohms generally produce bigger clouds as they can handle more wattage which leads to rapid heating and vapor production.
Maximize Airflow: Good airflow is critical to the production of big clouds and to service this hunger for oxygen most sub ohm devices come with adjustable airflow. To achieve the biggest clouds your tank can produce always set the airflow to its maximum.
Use an aggressive inhale: When coupled with maximum airflow, a fast and strong inhale will assist in delivering increase cloud production. A bigger and faster draw will also aid in keeping the coils cooler.
Choose max VG vape Juice: E-juices with a higher VG ratio produce bigger clouds so always go for juices with high VG.
Use appropriate batteries: Not all batteries are created equal. Only use batteries from a reputable manufacturer
